3/10 PRETTY BOY THORSON
| Wednesday, March 10th |
LOUNGE
Reminiscent of all your mid-90’s indie favorites (think early Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr., Superdrag, Sugar, Gin Blossoms, Smoking Popes, etc…) this is music that can seem loud and energetic but still relaxed and a prefect soundtrack for throwing down a few cans of Special Export. The songs are catchy, the melodies are familiar, and it’s put together loosely in a way that feels genuine and comes across as imperfect but charming and better because of it. My Roaring 20’s has that fuzzy rough-around-the-edges feel that makes is seem worn in and not really of the present. Find Me A Drink Home was #14 on my list of last year’s best records, and My Roaring 20’s will undoubtedly make my 2009 list. The album is out now on the ridiculously good Paper + Plastick label.

Since the days of Black Sabbath, the promise of heavy rock music has been this: that a perfect series of riffs, reinforced by a tightly-wound rhythmic unit, can deliver very real psychedelic effects, forcibly altering one’s conscious state of being. Though post-modern doomsters have toyed with elements of the formula (witness: Earth, Melvins, Isis, etc), the principle importance of the mono-riff has remained intact. World Class, the debut full-length from North Carolina’s Caltrop, is wildly — even transcendently successful because the band’s exhilarating performances are rooted in the awareness that their music has an uncanny, historically potent power. Indeed, Caltrop’s impeccable arrangements deliberately suggest a sort of ascendant scaffolding, the very foundation necessary for the audacious work of spiritual transformation.

That’s what the Love Language is to me: The modest declaration of the universal obvious. Songs written about apartments you’ve lived in and rotary phones that you’ve hung up. That there are winners and losers, but sometime tragedy makes the most beautiful story. After all, no one would remember the Titanic had it not sunk. Sleep Bellum Sonno has always pushed their sound to it’s limit, resulting in something unique and honest. Their songwriting is the direct outcome of three creative minds, never just the one. In a time where live music is an old idea, they have gone beyond their reach to build a community of musicians in hopes of restoring a true appreciation for the art that is music.

When Damien DeRose turned eighteen, he dropped out of school, packed up his guitar, and bought a sailboat in California with a friend. The plan was to sail down the coast, live life the simple way, and let the wind dictate the pace. However, as life would have it, DeRose’s journey took a different course and while the ship may not have left the harbor, he would find himself on a new journey writing and traveling across the U.S and Europe. A few years later, DeRose released a captivating home-recorded debut, and began to introduce himself to fans around the globe under the name Peasant. ”Fear Not Distant Lover”, a collection of thought-provoking lo-fi folk/pop songs, captured the ears and hearts of fans and reviewers alike.

Silverstein fits comfortably within the confines of emo, specifically the subgenre known as screamo — emotional rock with screaming. This isn’t as bad as it looks. In fact, Silverstein is one of the most melodic bands you’ll ever hear. In 2003, the Ontario, Canada-based group released its first full-length, When Broken Is Easily Fixed. The album mixed clean singing and pop chord progressions with heavier guitar tones, the occasional metal riff, and, yes, bouts of screaming. Talented vocalist Shane Told handled both singing and screaming, often in the space of a single verse. Kids ate up the angst-filled lyrics about relationships, with some even getting tattoos of the album’s cover, a robot holding its heart in its hand.
