The Apache Relay take more long car rides than most bands. But only a portion of their car time is dedicated to their touring schedule — the rest is something like driving in the middle of the night from Nashville to Alabama and back, just to listen to a new record 12 consecutive times. Despite their wagon’s sketchy brakes, this happens a lot. It’s where the indie-roots band discovered a shared love for the timelessness of Motown records, the weight of the Raising Sand album, the textures of modern rock bands, as well as the intensity of a really skilled acoustic player.

9/12 SIRENS FOR SLEEPING
Sunday, September 12th

SCALLYWAG
Imagine: taking a room full of ipods with diverse collections of music, loading them into a large cannon, and blasting it towards outerspace. Realistically, that would be a idiotic thing to do and also very dangerous. But metaphorically, it would defintely sound like Sirens For Sleeping.
SIRENS FOR SLEEPING is, at the present moment, a four-piece ensemble that hails from the shores of the Cape Fear in Wilmington, NC. Anyone would say, stylistically, their music is a rare breed. With odd structured songs that stray from the common “verse-chorus-verse-chorus” writing style, Sirens really break the mold of generic songwriting.

9/16 THE URBAN SOPHISTICATES
Thursday, September 16th
UPSTAIRS

The Urban Sophisticates began to provide just that with a project record that no one knew would slowly, but surely, change the face of the genre on the east coast. When ‘Urban’ began taking the road less traveled, it founded itself on the ideal that beats could move bodies and true music could move souls. heir sound has become the definition of what hip-hop will be in the near future. Lyrically, Benton James continues to confess his flaws and sarcastically point out what’s horribly right and wrong with the world. Aaron James brings a catchy, well sung hook to every song with old school influences of Soul and foundational R&B. Romondo Jessup brings his cool and collected rhythms through the drums. Jeremy Denman brings his wisdom and flow to the trumpet and flugle horn. Sal Mascali brings his crazy energy and high level of talent to the trombone. Ricky Nxumalo brings his flair for great bass lines and heavy stage presence to what has become a famous under ground live show.

BETA RADIO CD RELEASE SHOW
Beta Radio’s Americana-folk sound is the result of a decade-long collaboration between Wilmington, North Carolina’s Ben Mabry and Brent Holloman. When the pair met in 1998 they began playing music, first for themselves, then for friends, trying on different genres and searching for one that fit. Over time, Brent experimented with stripping the music back to its essentials, focusing on simple melodies and finding a haunting, minimal sound that felt like home. Concurrently, Ben was refining his lyric sensibility, turning to Nick Drake and Sufjan Stevens for inspiration. What he found when he returned to the page quickly became the lyric base for Beta Radio.

SOUTHERN COMEDY QUARTET
Come be a part of the live taping here at Nutt Street for the film “3 Weeks in September”. This groundbreaking documentary film will be told through the experiences of 4 comics that aren’t household names. They are however four young comics with the talent to break in the entertainment business in a very big way within the next 2 years.
Here we find Sean Patton, Nate Bargatze, Jarrod Harris and Rory Scovel basically at the point of no return in the stand-up comedy business. They’ve been performing long enough, they all have television credits and are making just enough money to get by but are still living hand to mouth. The time to turn it off and pursue something else with their lives and careers has passed. The more they push, the more they sacrifice, the more attention they get, the better their odds are of achieving ultimate success in such a cutthroat industry. The heartbreak and stress that exists in such a fun job has never been seen in such an honest light. This is comedy from the trenches. The realistic portrayal of what it actually takes to survive as a stand-up comedian that no one has ever heard of. Although each has their own distinctive voice, their ability to rock everything from a hipster room in Brooklyn to a casino in the Midwest is what sets them apart from all the rest.
This film will spotlight personal antidotes ranging from romantic to tragic. The connections they share as comedians, as southern gentlemen, as artists, as people pursuing a dream that can’t be defined by words.
Collectively, these comics are carving out a new genre of stand-up comedy that has yet to be defined by any “one” popularized label. These four comics truly represent the forefront of the next generation of Southern stand-up comics.
These comics have seen on:
Comedy Central, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Fallen, VH1, CMT, Tru TV.
Montreal “Just For Laughs” Comedy Festival, San Francisco Comedy Competition
Boston International Comedy Competition, Detroit Comedy Festival, Laughing Skull Festival

10/7 THE PACK A.D.
Thursday, October 7th
UPSTAIRS
The Pack A.D., a two-piece band from Vancouver, British Columbia, is a group that’s likely had its heads melted together, it’s thoughts distorted and rung enough to seem like one blobbish thought stream, to a point where it must feel like one cohesive distortion. They might wonder what’s what, in a haze of togetherness that leaves them helplessly living out the same dreams and nightmares about being chased through the spooky forest, or having your hands full of mythical chopped wood, like some old Foo Fighters video. There are beasts on the hunt, beasts who just want to be friends and certain modes of death all through the group’s new record “We Kill Computers,” but these images are just the coping mechanisms that help singer and guitarist Becky Black and drummer Maya Miller get through these longish days and survive the mental instabilities that they put themselves through in such limited company. Well, it’s a theory, at least. -Daytrotter
